Kometani first encountered Ozu's films as a young man, and he was immediately struck by their beauty and simplicity. He was particularly impressed by Ozu's use of long takes and his ability to capture the everyday moments of life in a way that was both poetic and realistic.
Kometani's own films share many of the same qualities as Ozu's. He often uses long takes and focuses on the everyday lives of ordinary people. However, Kometani's films are also more personal and introspective than Ozu's. He often explores themes of loss, grief, and the search for meaning in life.
In Chasing Ozu, Kometani writes about his own struggles as a filmmaker and his search for his own unique voice. He also discusses his relationship with Ozu and the influence that Ozu's work has had on his own.
Chasing Ozu is a fascinating and insightful book that offers a unique glimpse into the mind of one of Japan's most important filmmakers. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Japanese cinema or the art of filmmaking.
