Zikrayat: Eight Jewish Women Remember Egypt
The eight women who contributed to Zikrayat come from a variety of backgrounds. Some were born into wealthy families, while others grew up in poverty. Some were deeply religious, while others were secular. Despite their differences, they all shared a common experience: they were Jewish women living in Egypt.
The authors of Zikrayat are:
- Rachel Somekh was born in Cairo in 1929. She grew up in a wealthy family and attended a French school. She left Egypt in 1956, after the Suez Crisis.
- Esther Cohen was born in Alexandria in 1932. She grew up in a working-class family and attended a Jewish school. She left Egypt in 1957, after the Sinai War.
- Rachel Mizrahi was born in Cairo in 1934. She grew up in a middle-class family and attended a Jewish school. She left Egypt in 1956, after the Suez Crisis.
- Sarah Cohen was born in Alexandria in 1936. She grew up in a working-class family and attended a Jewish school. She left Egypt in 1957, after the Sinai War.
- Lily Bitton was born in Cairo in 1938. She grew up in a poor family and attended a Jewish school. She left Egypt in 1956, after the Suez Crisis.
- Alice Bitton was born in Cairo in 1940. She grew up in a poor family and attended a Jewish school. She left Egypt in 1956, after the Suez Crisis.
- Rachel Dayan was born in Alexandria in 1942. She grew up in a working-class family and attended a Jewish school. She left Egypt in 1957, after the Sinai War.
- Esther Gabbai was born in Cairo in 1944. She grew up in a wealthy family and attended a French school. She left Egypt in 1956, after the Suez Crisis.
The stories in Zikrayat are as diverse as the authors themselves. Some of the women write about their experiences of growing up in a close-knit Jewish community. Others write about the discrimination and prejudice they faced as Jewish women in Egypt. Still others write about the challenges they faced when they left their homeland and immigrated to a new country.
