About the Author
Sarah McBride is an American transgender activist and politician. She is the first openly transgender person to speak at the Democratic National Convention. She is also the first transgender person to be elected to a state Senate in the United States.
McBride was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1989. She came out as transgender to her family and friends in 2012. She began hormone therapy in 2013 and underwent gender confirmation surgery in 2016.
In 2016, McBride was elected to the Delaware State Senate. She is the first openly transgender person to be elected to a state Senate in the United States. She serves on the Senate Education Committee and the Senate Health and Social Services Committee.
McBride is a leading advocate for transgender rights. She is a board member of the Human Rights Campaign and the National Center for Transgender Equality. She is also a co-founder of the Delaware Coalition for Transgender Rights.
