Excerpt
"I was born in a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. My family had been forced to flee our home in the village of Majdal during the Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of Palestine that accompanied the creation of the Israeli state in 1948. We lived in a small, crowded tent, and I shared a mattress with my four siblings.
Life in the camp was hard. We were poor, and we often didn't have enough to eat. The Israeli authorities restricted our movement, and we were constantly harassed and humiliated by the soldiers.
But despite the hardships, I had a happy childhood. I played with my friends in the streets of the camp, and I went to school. I loved to read, and I dreamed of becoming a writer.
When I was 16, the first Intifada, or uprising, broke out. The Intifada was a popular uprising against the Israeli occupation. Palestinians of all ages took to the streets to protest the occupation and demand their rights.
I participated in the Intifada by throwing stones at Israeli soldiers and writing graffiti on the walls of the camp. I was arrested several times, and I was once beaten by the soldiers. But I was not afraid. I believed that we had the right to resist the occupation, and I was determined to do my part.
The Intifada lasted for six years, and it ended with the Oslo Accords, which were signed in 1993. The Oslo Accords created the Palestinian Authority, which was supposed to govern the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
But the Oslo Accords did not bring peace to Palestine. The Israeli occupation continued, and the Palestinians continued to suffer.
Today, I am 30 years old, and I am still living in the Gaza Strip. I am married and have two children. I work as a journalist, and I write about the Israeli occupation and the Palestinian struggle for freedom.
I am still hopeful that one day Palestine will be free. I believe that the Palestinian people have the right to self-determination, and I will continue to fight for their rights until they are achieved."
