After graduating from law school, Sotomayor worked as a prosecutor and then as a judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. In 1998, President Bill Clinton appointed her to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She served on the Second Circuit for 11 years, and she was widely regarded as one of the most respected judges on the court.

In 2009, President Obama nominated Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Her nomination was met with some controversy, but she was ultimately confirmed by the Senate. Sotomayor has since become a respected member of the Court, and she has written several important opinions, including the majority opinion in the landmark case of Shelby County v. Holder.

Early Life and Education

Sonia Sotomayor was born on June 25, 1954, in the Bronx, New York. Her parents, Juan and Celina Sotomayor, were Puerto Rican immigrants. Juan worked as a tool and die maker, and Celina worked as a nurse. Sotomayor had one brother, Juan Jr.

Sotomayor's childhood was marked by both challenges and opportunities. Her father died when she was nine years old, and her family struggled to make ends meet. But Sotomayor excelled in school, and she was determined to succeed. She attended Cardinal Spellman High School, a Catholic all-girls school in the Bronx. After graduating from high school, Sotomayor attended Princeton University, where she majored in history.

Sotomayor graduated from Princeton in 1976, and she went on to attend Yale Law School. She graduated from Yale in 1979, and she began her legal career as a prosecutor in the New York County District Attorney's Office.

Legal Career

After working as a prosecutor for several years, Sotomayor went into private practice. She worked as a litigator at the law firm of Pavia & Harcourt. In 1991, President George H.W. Bush appointed Sotomayor to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She was the first Hispanic woman to serve as a federal judge in New York.

Sotomayor served on the district court for seven years. In 1998, President Bill Clinton appointed her to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She was the first Hispanic judge to serve on the Second Circuit.

Sotomayor served on the Second Circuit for 11 years. She was a respected judge who was known for her intelligence, fairness, and compassion. In 2009, President Obama nominated Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.
