This book tells the story of Robert Moses, a Mississippi civil rights activist who went on to become a nationally recognized leader in education reform. Moses was born in 1935 in McComb, Mississippi, and grew up in a segregated society. He attended Tougaloo College, a historically black college in Mississippi, and then went on to earn a master's degree in philosophy from Harvard University.
In the early 1960s, Moses returned to Mississippi to work as a field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He helped to organize voter registration drives and other civil rights activities in the state. In 1964, Moses was arrested and beaten by police in Mississippi. The incident was captured on film and helped to galvanize support for the civil rights movement.
After the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Moses helped to found the Algebra Project, a non-profit organization that works to improve math education for African American students. The Algebra Project has developed a number of innovative teaching methods, and it has helped to improve math scores for thousands of students.
Moses's work has been recognized by numerous awards, including the MacArthur Fellowship and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is a professor of mathematics at the New York University Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
In this book, Moses tells the story of his life and work. He writes about his experiences in the civil rights movement and the Algebra Project. He also offers his thoughts on the state of race relations in the United States today.
Civil Rights From Mississippi To The Algebra Project is an inspiring and important book. It is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the civil rights movement, education reform, or American history.
