About W.S. Merwin
W.S. Merwin (1927-2019) was an American poet, translator, and environmentalist. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry twice, in 1971 and 1990, and the National Book Award for Poetry in 1975 and 1989. He was also appointed U.S. Poet Laureate from 1999 to 2001.
Merwin's poetry is known for its lyrical beauty, its philosophical depth, and its commitment to environmental conservation. He was a prolific writer, and his work has been translated into more than 30 languages.
Merwin was a generous mentor to many young writers, and he was also a tireless advocate for environmental protection. He founded the non-profit organization, The Merwin Conservancy, which works to preserve and protect endangered species and habitats.
