Charles Bragg was born in 1935 in rural Alabama, the son of a sharecropper. He grew up in poverty, and his childhood was marked by violence and abuse. As a young man, Charles Bragg joined the Army, and he served in Korea. After his discharge from the Army, Charles Bragg returned to Alabama, where he worked as a truck driver and a construction worker. He married Rick Bragg's mother, Ava, in 1963, and they had four children together.
Charles Bragg was a loving and devoted father, but he was also a deeply troubled man. He struggled with alcoholism and violence, and he often took his frustrations out on his family. Rick Bragg writes about the many times his father beat him and his siblings, and about the ways in which his father's violence affected his own life.
Despite his father's struggles, Rick Bragg never stopped loving him. He writes about the many times his father showed him kindness and compassion, and about the ways in which his father's love shaped his own life. Ava Man is a powerful and moving story about the复杂的relationship between a father and son. It is a story about love, loss, and redemption.
