George Brown was a remarkable man who played a pivotal role in the founding of Canada. Born in Scotland in 1818, he emigrated to Canada in 1843 and quickly became involved in politics. He founded the Globe newspaper in 1844, which became one of the most influential newspapers in Canada. Brown was a strong advocate for responsible government and for the creation of a united Canada. He was a delegate to the Charlottetown Conference in 1864 and the Quebec Conference in 1867, which led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. Brown served as the first Minister of Finance in the new government.
Brown was a complex and controversial figure. He was a brilliant orator and a gifted politician, but he was also known for his temper and his stubbornness. He was a strong supporter of Confederation, but he also opposed the policies of Prime Minister John A. Macdonald. Brown's life was cut short when he died of a heart attack in 1880 at the age of 62.
Despite his short life, Brown left a lasting legacy. He was one of the most important figures in the founding of Canada, and his ideas continue to shape Canadian politics today. An Account of the Life of George Brown and the Founding of Canada is a fascinating and well-written biography of this remarkable man. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Canadian history.
